AlmaLinux To Replace CentOS In 2021

CloudLinux has announced the birth of CentOS’s replacement, AlmaLinux. Available within the first quarter of 2021, AlmaLinux comes as a timely answer after Red Hat, CentOS’s Linux parent company, announced it was shifting focus from CentOS Linux and that CentOS would no longer be issued as a stable release. The new Linux distribution enables CentOS users to easily switch to a CentOS replacement that enjoys ongoing support.

According to Igor Seletskiy, CloudLinux CEO and Founder, “The demise of the CentOS stable release left a very large gap in the Linux community which prompted CloudLinux to step in and launch a CentOS alternative. For CloudLinux it was an obvious move: the Linux community was in need, and the CloudLinux OS is a CentOS clone with significant pedigree – including over 200,000 active server instances. AlmaLinux is built with CloudLinux expertise but will be owned and governed by the community. We intend to deliver this forever-free Linux distribution this quarter.”

The fact that AlmaLinux is a binary compatible fork of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), switching from CentOS will be extremely simple and requires very minimal effort.

AlmaLinux will be a free, open-source, community-driven, 1:1 binary compatible fork of RHEL 8 as well as future releases. For CentOS users, the company promises Lenix, a code-name for AlmaLinux’s development team, will provide an uninterrupted way to convert existing CentOS servers with absolutely zero downtime or need to reinstall anything. CloudLinux has assured users that they will be able to port entire CentOS server fleets with a single command with no reinstallation or reboots required.

Community Partnership

CloudLinux is developing AlmaLinux in close co-operation with the community. The company is committed to supporting distribution until at least 2029, investing at least $1m per year in its development. The open-source organization of the project means the community can carry AlmaLinux forward no matter what happens to the CloudLinux organization.

CloudLinux is dedicated to delivering the best customer experience. It has more than half a million product installations worldwide and more than 4000 customers. For more information, you can visit their website or follow them on Twitter
